Jes & Jas- Branding Film

May 7, 2015

Oh my heart just leaps with excitement when I get the opportunity to work on branding films. This is truly where artists can explore their creativity without the constraints of a wedding day timeline or regulations to follow. Branding films are definitely one of my most exciting projects I get to work with. Jes & Jas is a bridal accessory boutique that specializes in beautiful handmade veils & accessories. Jasmine Sabau and Jessica Indries are the creators behind all these beauties and it was such a pleasure working with them! We came up with the concept of targeting the type of bride they ideally want to cater to. We created a character of a very bohemian free-spirited bride, so it only made sense to utilize beautiful Southern California forests. I had so much fun creating some motion to this shoot and even brought in smoke-bombs to get crazy!

Enjoy.

My equipment must-haves

May 6, 2015

Every videographer has a few pieces of gear that they just can’t film without. When I was first starting out, I was trying a lot of different things to help me find what works the best for me. As time went on, I figured out what was the most worth investing in and set my priorities on getting those items first before all the fancy lenses and cameras. I hope this gives you some insight on helpful tools for videography.

1. MONOPOD

My monopod is EVERYTHING. I am on this device for almost every shot during a wedding. The beauty of this tool is that it gives you stabilization similar to a tripod, but very portable. One of the most important parts of a wedding day is the ceremony. I try to be as discreet as possible, but I also need to jump around to grab different angles. My monopod gives me the freedom to do this. I use a Manfrotto monopod, which gives me great quality since I use it so much!

2. Viewfinder

My viewfinder saves my life in the bright sun. One of the most important parts of filming is making sure everything is in focus. When operating in the bright sun it can be really hard to see the LCD screen. I found myself very frustrated in the beginning stages of filming because I could not see the screen when the sun would hit it. The viewfinder provides a little box & magnification to make sure everything is in focus. It is easy to pop the viewfinder on and off throughout a shoot as well. The bottom photo shows when I took off the box because I was in shade for those particular shots. I highly recommend investing in this tool, especially if you plan on shooting outdoors.

3. Kelly Moore Bag

Lastly, I don’t ever go to a shoot without my Kelly Moore Bag. It looks like a stylish bag on the outside, but it is an awesome camera bag on the inside. There are padded sides to protect my gear as I wear it. When I am shooting a wedding, I need to switch out my lenses a lot and relatively quickly. I know when my lens goes into my bag it will be protected. Kelly Moore sure knows her stuff, creating high-quality super stylish camera bags!

Brooke & Doug Wedding Film

April 27, 2015

“Love is like the wind, you can’t see it but you can feel it.” – Nicholas Sparks

Brooke & Doug are still one of my most memorable couples I have been able to film. I felt as if I was hanging out with good friends all day. This is how it should be on your wedding day. Surrounding yourself with people who you are comfortable around and that love you. Even though for some we meet for the first time on their big day, I really love all my couples. I truly care about them and what goes on beyond the wedding day. It is hard not to fall in love with Brooke & Doug. They are some of the most genuine people I have ever met. Their sweet presence is just infectious. Their day was so heartfelt from the start. Brooke made bridesmaids gift bags that included such sweet items and a handwritten note to each of them. I have to admit I was tearing up watching her best girlfriends tear up reading their cards. This continued through Brooke & Doug’s gift exchange, as well as hearing the sweet words they had to say to each other.

The rest of their wedding day was not only beautifully detailed oriented, but just downright FUN! They had conga lines and dancing going on until the stars appeared in their open roof dance floor. One of my most favorite parts of their day was their sweet vintage getaway. **Future couples** their is nothing cooler than leaving your wedding in pure style & class! I included a few screenshot moments of their day with their wonderful wedding film at the bottom. You will just die when you hear their sweet message to each other!

How my love story began

April 22, 2015

balloon

Well the truth is my love story began far before Travis got down on one knee. But for today’s blog post, we will just focus on that particular part:) In 2012 I was currently living in New York City competing as a professional ballroom dancer. Travis was living in Arizona finishing up his bachelors degree. (long distance is the worst) Every second I longed to be with him, I’m a firm believer in absence makes the heart grow fonder 🙂

April rolled around and my birthday was approaching. I wanted to be around my family and friends, so I decided to take a trip home so I could celebrate with them! That evening Travis picked me up from the airport (my heart could’ve exploded with excitement) and we went to a super high-end restaurant…California Pizza Kitchen 😉 He told the next morning he had a fun birthday surprise for me and that we had to get up super early (3am people. 3am.) It was a great cover-up being my birthday because I truly thought he was just doing something really sweet for my birthday and wanted to celebrate just us that day since we would be doing other things with my family on my actual birthday.

So here it is 3am. I hear a knock at my bedroom window (Travis often came to my bedroom window- romantic right?) It’s completely dark outside. We are heading out and driving towards the mountains. My thoughts were that we were going to go on a hike and watch the sunrise and maybe have a little romantic breakfast or something along those lines. That was until I saw us pulling into this airway park. I was still very confused thinking well I didn’t pack anything so we can’t be flying anywhere. Thats when I noticed the hot air balloons! Travis surprised me with a private hot air balloon ride to watch the sunrise!! I couldn’t believe it I was so overjoyed, seriously freaking out.

It was so incredible watching them blow it up and see the beautiful colors! Travis & I got in to enjoy our flight around the city. We watched the sunrise while floating in the air. It was seriously one of the coolest things I’ve ever done! At this point, I am in no way thinking about anything else but the fact that I couldn’t believe he did this for my birthday. We begin to descend and Travis starts acting a little funny. He keeps telling me to “look over there” and “look over here” I was getting really confused why he started becoming so insistent on me looking specifically on one side of the balloon. He then proceeded to tell me all the things he loved about me, my heart is racing and it feels as if no one else exists in the whole but us two. After he is done pouring his heart out (and I mean pouring) he tells me to look at the ground. I saw my entire family as well as his parents holding up a HUGE “Will you marry me” sign. When I looked back at him, he was down on one knee with a beautiful ring in his hand.

It was the easiest decision I have ever had to make, YES!!! From the top of world with all my heart, YES!!!! Travis was the kind of man I had been praying for and dreaming of my entire life. He was my first boyfriend, my first love, and my absolute heart’s desire. In fact, we really knew we wanted to marry each other  from only a few months of dating, but waited for God’s perfect timing. We then proceeded to have a celebratory breakfast with mimosas! I remember sitting there starting at my ring and surrounded by my family and truly felt like I was on a cloud. Never could I have imagined a more perfect man for me. The rest of the day was spent smiling and gazing into each other’s eyes realizing that we would spend the rest of our time together! The night ended with a surprise engagement party with my closest family & friends. The day couldn’t have been more perfect. This day 3 years ago started my forever.

Mckenna Ross Senior Portraits

April 13, 2015

So my sister came to visit me from Arizona to take her senior pictures. I don’t advertise myself as a photographer, because my main focus is filmmaking. However, because I love my sister so much and because it’s so much fun to explore cali I couldn’t say no. Here are a few of my aboslute favorites from our weekend together!

The Hybrid Workshop // Branding Film

April 11, 2015

Back in November, I had the extreme privilege of filming a branding film for the Hybrid Workshop with Jeremy Chou & Kirk Mastin. They are hybrid shooters, meaning they shoot both film & digital. Their workshop took place at the prestigious Ace Hotel in Palm Springs. The styled shoot was just absolutely breathtaking. So many details were involved I found myself just giddy. For any photographer looking to bridge the gap between film & digital, I highly recommend this workshop!

I absolutely love creating branding films that encompass the overall message without dialogue. Conveying emotion without the use of words. I love working with styled shoots because I get more time to play with my vision versus a wedding day that can be a little hectic. I will diving more into how I approach branding films soon!

For now, enjoy the film.
